The big day – buying the scoot
While I was tempted to buy from Vespa SoHo, the idea of crossing the bridge out of Manhattan on my first day of riding did not sit well with me. After a little research I came across Vespa Brooklyn. I’d spotted it from the BQE one day last Summer, but it hadn’t really come across my radar since.
They’re located in Fort Greene. I’d heard great things about Brooklynbretta who are closer to me, but they don’t stock new Vespas.
I have to say the guys (particularly Andrew) down there were a real pleasure to talk with. I already knew which bike and which color I wanted – a stock orange S150 with no extras, so I didn’t need the hard sell, just a sit down with the paperwork.
Having never purchased a new car in the US before, and only once briefly owning a used one in Texas, I had no idea how complicated the process was going to be.
Boy, did Andrew make spending money easy – a little too easy. In theory I could have gotten that scoot out of the show room and driven away with it, plates, insurance and all in a little over an hour.
It’s a great showroom and I was surprised by just how much stock they had. Andrew showed me the back room/workshop and they must have had upwards of 30 bikes in there. “Getting ready for Spring” was his reply.
And there my scoot will stay until such time as I have my full license and can drive that baby out of there. It’s going to be an agonizing wait.
The MSRP of the scoter is $4199. With plates, title, taxes and what not, out the door it was about $5000 even on the road. I also purchased a lock and cover in readiness for the dreaded day I have to leave it parked alone on the mean streets of New York.
