Spring is here and the scoots are out

I took a stroll last night, killing a couple of hours walking from Union Square, through SoHo and into the East Village, and man are the scoots (and motorcycles) appearing from Winter storage.
In the space of a couple of hours I kept a mental note of 24 scooters. Most stationary, some in motion.
The vast majority of them were Vespa LX150s in various colors, but I also caught sight of a couple of Gran Turismos, a couple of Buddy 125s, and a Yamaha Vino.
Three highlights stood out.
1. A classic Vespa – I’m no expert but I would say it was from the early 60s, in where else, Little Italy. It wasn’t in great shape but it was clearly a daily runner.
2. A guy who bombed past me on an LX150 and announced his presence to the entire neighborhood in the East Village because he’s clearly from the school of thought that being noticed means being heard. Sounds like he’d drilled the pipes on his scoot for ultimate obnoxiousness.
3. Finally, a big hello to the gentleman who bombed through Astor Place on a beautiful yellow and white two-tone classic Lambretta in a suit smoking a cigar. I salute you, whoever you are.
