Second MTA fare hike coming?
Another reason to make the switch to two wheels?
The New York Times is reporting that the MTA’s financial woes may be worse than many had feared, leading to a potential second fare increase before 2009 is out.
This is in addition to the fare increase (and subway and bus cuts) already confirmed to go into effect on May 1st that will raise single-rides 25% from $2 to $2.50, and all plans including unlimited monthly cards to rise by approximately the same percentage.
Additionally, even though it has received less immediate press, don’t forget the fact that MetroNorth and LIRR fares have also been approved for a 25% increase beginning June 1st with bridge and tunnel tolls are projected to be raised in July.
From the article:
“What it suggests is that the M.T.A. will have to take additional actions in order to balance the budget,” said Gary Dellaverson, chief financial officer of the authority. He said that could include deeper service cuts or a second fare increase before the year is out, but he refused to give details of what was being considered.
We’ll keep you posted. Hey! anything we can do to convince you to scoot.
