Punk Island 2009 – June 21st
You’re going to have a hard time convincing the New York Harbor Ferry service to allow you to take your scoot over to Governor’s Island on Sunday June 21st but you can be sure that you’ll be moshing alongside plenty of scooter fans at the other end.
This year marks the second annual Punk Island music festival, with over 70 bands appearing on 12 stages scattered across Governor’s Island and a skateboarding display. If you haven’t been to the island since it opened to the public a couple of years back, this is an ideal first visit. The place has a ghostly fascinating vibe with most of the original military structures empty but intact.
The festival kicks off at 10.00am and ends at 5.00pm so you can be tucked up in bed before anyone knows you’ve been gone. Ferries run every 30 minutes from the Battery Maritime Terminal which sits right next door to the Staten Island Ferry Station in lower Manhattan.
You’ll register upon arriving (or is it disembarkation?) and have a chance to grab t-shirts, stickers and other Punk Island swag including limited edition skateboards.
For further information including a complete line-up of the bands, head on over to Punk Island’s page at Time Out New York.
