New York cabbies continue to talk and drive
The New York Times today has an article about something the NYC scooterist knows all too well – New York cabbies haven’t heard the news – it’s illegal to talk on the cellphone and drive at the same time.
What you might not know is that New York City cab drivers have been banned from using any kind of cell phone usage including hands-free solutions for a decade.
Drivers (of any kind) have been proven to be four times more likely to have an accident if they are using the phone than not.
Unfortunately the article doesn’t go on to offer much in the way of good news, and simply reflects on how hard it is to enforce.
For our part, next time you ride with a chatty driver, consider letting them know that you don’t feel comfortable with them talking while driving either for your own safety or that of your two-wheeled friends.
