NYPD cracking down on inspection stickers?

Remember Hill Street Blues, or The Wire? Remember when the cops would start the day with chief telling them what they should be cracking down on? I get the feeling this week it’s motorcycle inspection stickers.

When I was at Scooter Bottega this past Saturday getting the PX150e inspected, Robbie told me that he’d had an influx of scooterists coming in telling him that they had been busted for not having a sticker and they needed one ASAP.

Last night riding home on 14th Street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan, a cop pulled up next to me at a red and his partner began taking a keen interest in my bike going so far as to wind the window down and stare. Two sections later he’s pulling me over.

“Do you know why I pulled you over?”

“Actually, no officer.”

He looks down at my inspection sticker on my fork, says, “Oh, it’s 2010. My mistake.” and jumps back in the car.

So there you go. Unconfirmed. Call it rumor-ville. Call it hearsay. But I say make sure you’re sticker is up to date. For $6 it’s a small price to pay for a whole heap of trouble.

I had the same odd feeling, only to go over to my scoot, which was parked on Joralemon st. in Brooklyn Heights, and find a ticket for “inspection sticker missing”. Well, on a 63 Vespa, the inspection sticker is on the fender, and is visible if the officer takes the time to LOOK FOR IT! So now I get to miss a day of work going to take care of this!

Absolutely. Have been ticketed twice in a week.

I just got a ticket on my 2008 Suzuki SV 650. I just got it plated in NY this spring.

I’ve never heard anything about having to get inspection stickers. This morning, i got a ticket for not having one.

    Looking on the DMV website
    http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/vehsafe.htm

    I found:
These motor vehicles are exempt from emissions inspection for gas-powered vehicles:

Vehicles that are less than two model years old, or more than 25 model years old.
Diesel-powered vehicles 8500 lbs. or less and Diesel-powered vehicles 8501 lbs. and more registered in the NYCMA area that are required to have the emissions inspection for diesel-powered vehicles.
    Electric-powered vehicles.
    Motorcycles.
Vehicles that are registered as farm equipment or that have historical plates.
Homemade vehicles or custom vehicles that are registered in the Upstate Area.

This is listed 3 times on the same web page!

Unfortunately it looks like the DMV is only listing exceptions for emissions inspection. All scooters and motorcycles regardless of age (or newness) require a safety inspection sticker.
