Next parking task force meeting tomorrow evening
If you want to put your muscle behind the New York Motorcycle and Scooter Task Force‘s current campaign for dedicated two-wheeled parking around the city, you’ll have an opportunity to do so tomorrow evening. See below for the latest:
The NYMSTF meets regularly on the first Tuesday of the month. Our next meeting will be this Tuesday May 4th at 7:30 PM. As usual, we will meet in the conference room at Jesse Erlbaum’s office, 817 Broadway between 11th and 12th St on the 10th fl. Call for entry. (917)796-9392 or (917)647-3049.
Our primary focus this month will once again be dedicated two wheel parking. We had a very satisfying victory with the official approval of two of our seven proposed spots in CB2. The other five spots were rejected when community members said they feared noisy bikes. This is our first parking victory, and it’s extra sweet because CB2 is where Alan Gerson once proposed banning motorcycles. The next step is for DOT to act on CB2′s resolution. CB2 has also invited us to submit other spots to the Transportation Committee later this summer. We’ll be strategizing about working with the community to allay their fears and also about choosing spots which will be less likely to garner community objections.
We have been asked to repeat our presentation to the CB4 Transportation Committee at their next scheduled meeting on Wednesday May 19th. Jesse handled the hailstorm of questions from CB4 Transportation Committee members like a champ, but they still want us to repeat the presentation so that community members can be informed and given a chance to comment. We were also asked to produce a great deal of data, some of which will be difficult to procure. Jesse and the Parking Committee will have our work cut out for us.
We have been invited to submit some dedicated two wheel spots to CB6 in Brooklyn. CB6 covers Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, and Red Hook.
We will be discussing a problem area for riders on Grand between Mercer and Crosby St. where bikes and scooters continue to get tickets while legally parked.
We will also be discussing a survey which Jesse has proposed. It would be similar in size to Jillian’s survey about parked bikes being knocked over, but the subject would be loud pipes and rider’s attitudes towards them.
Held over from last month’s meeting was a presentation by Nancy Ortiz from ABATE about promoting lane sharing legislation in New York State.
Also held over from last month’s meeting was a discussion of where we would like to spend our energy and what our next priorities should be. We have many issues on which we would like to move on both the NYC and NY State level. As a small group we need to choose our next issues since we simply don’t have enough members to tackle all of our issues at once.
If there’s anything you would like to add to the agenda please let us know.
