Another rally means another patch for D.C. scooterist Mark Bennett.

We laughed, we cried, we certainly got lost. We did not however break down.

This weekend, Jersey Shore’s faded glory beach resort of Wildwood saw two independent and equally strange subcultures descend on it’s beach, bars, and boardwalk. East coast scooter rally goers in attendance for the first annual, “East Coast Classic,” and a national “Elk” convention and I rode down to take part. In the rally that is, not the convention.

With fellow riders Melissa, Patrick, Zach, Nick, Oz, Maya, Kurt, and Kristed; I braved what turned out to be a mammoth ten hour ride down from Brooklyn through Staten Island and down the Jersey Shore to Wildwood, south of Atlantic City on Friday to arrive just in time for the kick-off event on Friday night.

What should have been about a six hour, one-hundred-and-seventy-or-so mile, journey – long enough in itself – was stretched further by a missed turning leaving Staten Island as we took a meandering, though pretty, route 35 instead of the more direct route 9.

No doubt our heads were still fuzzy following the first hurdle of the day. Crossing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on our Italian ladies’ shopping bikes in high winds. Heads-down and hearts in our mouths. As Oz – who has only been riding for a few months – put it in videogame parlance, “Achievement Unlocked.” Achievement unlocked indeed.

Yes, we crossed this on scooters on a windy day.

Next highlight? Stopping for gas only to find out that Zach’s seat on his 60′s Lambretta Series 3 refused to budge, blocking access to the gas tank. An hour and several borrowed tools and scooterist ingenuity later and the seat was finally opened and the locking pin mechanism removed for the remainder of the weekend.

Next hairy moment. Zach’s side panel flying off at 50 miles an hour only to be picked up by Melissa playing sweeper at the back of the pack. Sorry again Zach, my bad on failing to correctly secure the panel.

A few more rest stops for gasoline, stretching, and bad road food later and we raced against the sun like vampires-in-reverse for the final stretch of road to finally arrive around 9 o’clock to check in for the rally.

Check in took place at the kick-off party at Wildwood’s restaurant-cum-bar-cum-disco-cum-Tiki bar, “Flip Flopz.” As concise a slice-of-life of the Jersey Shore as I could ever describe.

Dropping off our bikes at our motels following the check-in was promptly followed by cab rides back to “Flip Flopz” for a night of chit-chat, beer, food, and more beer.

Saturday morning saw the day starting at the Starlux Motel meet-up which acted as rally central for the weekend. License plates gave evidence of a hundred or so bikes from New York, New Jersey, Maine, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. as we downed coffee and bagels, caught up with old friends, and talked shop.

A wide slice of scooters were represented with the usual selection of Vespas (vintage and modern,) Lammys, Hondas, and more. GS classics with side cars to souped up TS1 racing Lambrettas. Rat bikes to paint jobs and chrome. Scooters filled the Starlux parking completely and overflowed into the street causing a good deal of interest from passers-by.

Saturday lunchtime saw a leisure ride south to the beach at beautiful Cape May at the very southernmost tip of New Jersey led by Philly’s Rabble Rouser Scooter Club member Tedford. An hour at the beach gave plenty of time for souvenir shopping and lunch. The ride back was punctuated by New Jersey rider Clinton driving into the weekend’s official photographer. In true scooterists tradition the photo bug was more concerned about Clinton’s SX200 than his own wellbeing.

Saturday afternoon gave the Brooklyn gang and myself a chance to take to the boardwalk and ride the roller coaster. At $5.50 the Verrazano had given a significantly cheaper thrill-ride but the $8 wooden “Great White” coaster was a thrill all the same.

Saturday evening and it was back at “Flip Flopz” for a buffet, drinks, and the all important raffle. Trophies, some as big as the scooterists themselves, were also awarded to riders who had participated int he CORSA and Corsette (Ladies’ small frame) gum-ball races down to the rally. The raffle consisted of plenty of goodies culminating in the grand prize of a 1965 Allstate acquired, stripped, and restored by East Coast Classic participants with discounted parts generously supplied by rally sponsors.

Sunday morning and following a brief stop for a stomach full of carbohydrates at “Uncle Bill’s Pancake House” and it was time to wave goodbye to the rally and start out for home. Route 9 provided a straight shot home over the next few hours avoiding the Verrazano and plumping for one last roller-coaster of rides, Route 1-9 into Jersey City. This last six hour ride thankfully provided one last memorable moment that summed up the weekend: Pat bringing his Fireball Stella to a screeching halt, grabbing wildly for his helmet and throwing it off his head onto a neighboring lawn somewhere in mid-Jersey. Why? A hornet had decided to take the inside of his helmet along for a ride. Nice one pat. Good to know you are cool under pressure.

Three days and eighteen hours or so of total riding down and I’m left with happy memories and blisters from keeping the throttle pegged. One last thing? I went to jump on my trusty Jet 200 this morning for work. The bike that had made it effortlessly there and back again without a hitch. Pulled in the clutch, put it in first to pull away and the gear cable snapped. How’s that for being seen home safe by the scooter gods?

It would appear that among the riders of this past weekend’s NY Scooter Club sixth annual BlockParty was New York Times reporter Nick Kurczewski.

Nick joined rally-goers on Saturday night for the annual night-time ride through Times Square and reported his impressions as part of yesterday’s “Wheels” blog for The Gray Lady covering the smiles that the scooterists caused among midtown tourists.

Regional scooterists familiar with the rally scene will no doubt appreciate that Nick got to interview Rhode Island custom Lambretta rider Richard “Ogre” McKay, a familiar (and charismatic) face at local scooter events.

Gathering of the tribes

Friday night was the kick off for the 2011 NY Scooter Club BlockParty.  I rode just a few blocks from my house up to Carbon Negative, where the “Meet and Greet” was to take place.  When I arrived, there were already about 40 scooters parked around the back, near the service entrance.  People were mingling, and I quickly made my way inside to the free coffee and donuts.  That gave me the opportunity to wander through the work shop, and the display room, both making me green with envy.  So many tools, so many beautiful scoots.

The plan was to hang out for an hour or so, and then commence the first ride of the three-day BlockParty.  Not long after my arrival, there were about 100 scooters parked up and down the street.  The variety was amazing, everything from vintage Vespas and Lambrettas, to the newest large format Hondas.  These bikes and their riders were raring to go, and the organizers were not going to disappoint.  Brendan, the ride leader, made a brief announcement, with the tribe gathered ’round, explaining to newbies and veterans alike, the rules and tips for riding in a large pack.

Group rides have their own set of challenges, but ultimately, they often provide a sense of security because you are not all alone out there.  The mapped event was to take us throughout Brooklyn and some of Queens, eventually ending up at Gantry State Park in Long Island City.  From there, after a brief rest, the ride would finish at St. Vitus bar in Greenpoint, owned and operated by some fellow scooter enthusiasts. Despite the prediction for sour weather, the sun peeked through just before we left, which seemed to make the mood even better for this first event of the seasonal BlockParty.

The ride started off well, with the pack seeming to really get the hang of moving together.  Then the red lights kicked in, and the group was divided into smaller segments.  Typical for NYC scooting, but the leaders had planned ahead for such eventualities, and riders were left behind on corners to direct the next bunch toward the route.  This way the entire pack was at least headed in the right direction.

After a few stops by the lead group to wait, the rest caught up, and we would take off again, continuing into the belly of Queens.  At a certain point, I realized I had lost track of our direction, but gave into the adventure, and we continued on….

About 3/4 of the way into the ride, it was my turn to stay behind to direct the stragglers in the right direction.  Once I saw the last rider pass me, I joined the group again, realizing at that point, we had gotten a little turned around.  So, after a brief stop, we got back on track and off we went towards Gantry State Park.  The cars and passersby beeping and hollering, cheering us on, was a welcome change of pace to the typical ornery New Yorker sneer.  This is one of the benefits of riding in such a large pack.  The spectacle makes people smile.

Once we got to the park, we all pulled up onto the sidewalk, and parked for a short while.  Another chance to meet and greet, and talk shop with some of the other scooter owners.  It was impossible not to be impressed with the view of Manhattan from here.  But the night wasn’t over for most, so after about 1/2 hour, we all saddled up and back on the road, just a short distance over the Pulaski Bridge back into Greenpoint for the finale at the bar.  After unsuccessfully trying to park for about 5 minutes, I decided to call it a night, having finally become cold as the night chill set in.

The NY Scooter Club‘s 6th Annual “BlockParty” is taking place this weekend with the festivities kicking off on Friday evening. The fine folks behind the rally have firmed up the itinerary over the past couple of weeks and have finally nailed the bad boy down. Unlike past years the Coney Island ride is now taking place on Sunday, but that sets up nicely for a scavenger hunt at the sea.

7:15 PM: Ride leaves for Gantry State Park. We’ll take the roundabout way to the park, hitting some little known and fascinating parts of Brooklyn and Queens, before heading to one of New York’s most scenic locations. Be sure to bring a camera for this one!

9:00 AM: MEETUP & RIDE FROM THE BRASS MONKEY (55 Little West 12th Street, New York, NY 10014) For those from out of town or otherwise unfamiliar with the world west of the Hudson, there will be a ride at 9:30 to help get people over to the Royal Cliffs Diner. We’ll basically be heading up the West Side to the George Washington Bridge, then going briefly up the Palisades to the Diner.

9:30 AM: ***MEET & GREET/SIGN IN AT ROYAL CLIFFS DINER***, 717 East Palisade Avenue Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632-3045 Pick up a BlockParty logo t-shirt, patch, rally swag, and raffle tickets (available all weekend, while supplies last).

11:15 AM: ***HUDSON RIVER RIDE TO METRO SCOOTERS***–Head out from Vespa Jersey City along the banks of Hudson, featuring some great views, and great roads through the Palisades to Piermont, Nyack and the surrounding hills, and end up at Metro Scooters. Should be a beautiful ride.

RIDE EXPERIENCE: Moderate (no highway riding, but there will be some stretches of open road at speed, some steep hills and winding roads)

6:00 P.M. – ***RETURN TO MANHATTAN***, Grab some dinner if you’re still hungry (it’s New York, we trust you to find a place), and maybe wander the High Line

9:00 PM: ***TIMES SQUARE NIGHT RIDE*** – Big night ride leaving from the Brass Monkey (55 Little West 12th Street, New York, NY 10014) up the West Side and to and through Times Square and possibly by Washington Square as well. This is a New York tradition, so don’t miss it.

The warmer weather means we’re well into Rally season, with this coming weekend’s 6th Annual New York Scooter Club “Blockparty” kicking things off proper, and the East Coast Vintage Classic coming up over the first weekend in June.

But the NY Scooter Club isn’t the only club in town pulling off another rally this year. If you’ve got the energy left after those two events, it’s time to head off to the Delaware River Water Gap for a weekend of camping, drinking, jackassery, and of course riding thanks to the Usual Suspects Scooter Club.

The USSC’s third annual rally at the Cedar Ridge Campgrounds in New Jersey, “Still Riding With A Jackass,” is taking place over the weekend of June 24th to June 26th and pre-registration has begun. Prices range from $35 to $55 depending on the length of your stay over the weekend, with all fees guaranteeing a T-shirt and rally swag. Vintage and modern riders are equally welcome.

I attended last year’s “Sloppy Seconds” and can attest to a fantastic experience: Camping, food, movies, food, music, food, a gymkhana, food, the annual fire, beer, and (did I mention) more food than you can possibly eat. Between the meals expect some fantastic ride-outs away from the pollution of the big-city if not the pollution of two-strokes passing some beautiful scenery from the saddle of your scoot.

In an effort to combat a hectic rally calendar on the East coast this year, regional clubs have pooled together to bring the East Coast Classic Scooter Rally to life.

The event will be taking place over the weekend of June 4th and 5th with festivities kicking off on Friday evening, June 3rd in the appropriately classic beach town of Wildwood, New Jersey, that’s approximately a 4 to 5 hour scooter ride from the city off the Interstate, 2 to 3 on it.

The itinerary itself is slowly emerging but is currently set to include a 3 hour ride to the southern tip on New Jersey, a beach run and a boardwalk scavenger hunt.

Hotels and motels are gradually filling up in the area, but the organizers have a handy list for you including local campgrounds if that’s your thing.

While the focus is naturally on classic scooters, scooters (and scooterists) young and old are welcome. Pre-registration is now in full swing and $35 gets you full access to all the events, a T-shirt, patch, the usual swag and some food provided.

Will keep you up to date on the event as more details emerge. You of course can keep up to date via the official rally website and Facebook event page where initial questions are being asked and answered for curious minds who want to know. With 170 folks currently promising attendance via the Facebook page, the event is shaping up to be quite the crowd.

If you’ve never been to the BlockParty, then join this year – no excuses. This year’s graphic of a Vespa S150 is appropriate given that the NYSC have an equal opportunity reputation for welcoming owners of vintage scoots and modern four-strokes alike. The weekend typically contains all the rally staples of catching up with friends old and new, ride-outs, raffles, partying and the occasional break-down with eager grease monkeys lining up to help. Photographs from last year should give you a taste of what to expect.

Nothing more beyond the dates yet but we’ll keep you up to date on the schedule as more details are announced. You of course can also keep up to date by keeping tabs on the event’s own website.

Turns out there is a little group called the Vespa World Club.  It’s an organization of people who love their Vespa Scooters, and have loosely banded together to form an alliance of like-minded individuals.  I mention this, because, not only was I unaware of the club, but I was also unaware of their yearly gathering, called Vespa World Days, being held this year in Gjøvik, Norway.  The town rests in what looks to be peaceful surroundings, about 70 miles due north of Oslo.  The map shows only six roads that intersect the “highway” that takes you up to that village, the rest just green lands and lakes, unlike anything we have here in the city.  It is an event dedicated to all things Vespa (as well as other vintage or European bikes).  I’d love to experience it!

Although I know that few of us, if any, will be able to travel all the way to Gjøvik, Norway for this event, these past winter months have heightened my flights of fancy.  I have spent the past few months feeling [scooter] stifled.  With the extreme snow and horrible riding conditions that came with this weather, I found myself staring out the window, daydreaming of some great adventure I could do on my scooter.

Maybe Norway is a bit too far (and far too expensive!).  But what type of road trip might I accomplish, if I start carefully planning now?  I would love to head outside the city limits and cruise the more casual roads of upstate New York.  I’d love to head out to see the tip of Long Island, in Montauk, for the first time.  I could even take a ferry to Connecticut or Rhode Island from out there!  Perhaps I could visit the border between New Jersey and Pennsylvania, which boasts trees and wildlife that no one would believe could BE in New Jersey!  The Appalachian Trail could be fun, although I’m not much of a hiker, and I’m not sure the people that are, would NOT appreciate me scooting on their trails spewing 2-stroke exhaust.

Any of these options would be a refreshing change of pace, to the typical Brooklyn roads I ride.  Anything to kick start this Spring riding season into high gear.  I am itching to ride, I am ready to go…

The reason I bring this up, is that although I have an incredible amount of energy and enthusiasm to get my bike running right, looking good, and ready to roll, I find myself dreading just riding the neighborhood.  The thought of heading to Norway for some scenic rides, away from all the traffic and mayhem that I experience here, has made me dread it even more.  So what’s a rider to do?  Maybe I need to start up my list of ‘good rides’ again.  A list of locations I would like to ride to this season, which will get me away from the appalling start-and-stop of Brooklyn.  If I tried for one good ride a week, I think  the rest of the local rides would seem more bearable.  I need some routes I can sink my teeth (wheels) into!

I’m opening up GoogleMaps, and charting a course to the unknown.  I don’t care where it is, I just care that it’s not familiar…..

The country’s largest Vespa owners and appreciators scooter rally, AmeriVespa, has opened the doors of its website in preparation for next summer’s get-together.

The 19th annual AmeriVespa meet up will take place in New Orleans between Thursday June 16th and Sunday June 19th and the schedule already reveals that as expected it’ll be a long weekend of rides, raffles, parties, gymkhanas and more. As is tradition the event is hosted by a local club. This year that honor goes to the New Orleans Scooter Cooperative.
